Yaounde: Ministry Of Defence Puts Capital on High Alert Over Possible Boko Haram Attacks

Cameroon’s Defense Ministry has put Yaounde on high alert over possible militant attacks, stepping up patrols at government buildings and public areas.

Locations in Yaounde with an increased security presence include ministries, army barracks, military hospitals and crowded places, according to a statement signed by Defense Minister Joseph Beti Assomo and e-mailed by his communications office.

While Cameroon’s capital hasn’t been targeted before, the country’s Far North region has been hit by attacks by Islamist militant group Boko Haram that have killed more than 70 people since the beginning of the year. Most were bombings by teenagers with explosive devices strapped to their bodies.

Meanwhile Boko Haram terrorists are currently engaged in a heavy gun fight with Cameroonian armed forces at Karawa in the far north region, a report is saying.Local newspaper, L’Oeil du Sahel, said the confrontations are currently taking place in Kerawa along the border with Nigeria in Cameroon’s far north.
