Cameroon defender, Nicloas Nkoulou one of the highly paid African players in Olympic Lyon has announced he is taking a break from the national team, the Indomitable Lions.
Nkoulou, former captain with 74 caps was one of the rare aged players in Hugo Broos’ squad at the Nations Cup and played second role while some young players like Teikeu were given the chance to play.
He won the Africa Cup of Nations with the team playing two matches, first in the line-up against Gabon and replaced Teikeu Adophe wounded against Egypt. He scored a spectacular header served by Benjamin Moukandjo for a 2-1 win to end the long Egypt domination.
Unveiling his decision to FootMercato website, Nkoulou said, “After the winning the Africa Cup of Nations with my teammates, and brothers, supported by all Cameroonians and with a sense of having accomplished my duty for country, I have decided to take a break from the national team. In total possession of my capacities I wish to concentrate on the objectives I fixed for club”, he explained.
“Since the beginning of my career, defending the colours of my country has always guided my steps. This mission has always constituted a motivating factor and one of my priotities. This decision has been difficult to take and i pondered on the advantages and disadvantages before arriving at a conclusion. The decision seems necessary to me and corresponds to my main objective, Come back in force tomorrow because a Lions never dies”.
