AFCON 2019: Algeria says they plan to take hosting rights from Cameroon

“We are presently following up documents for the eventual transfer of the 2019 Afcon from Cameroon to Algeria. If an opportunity shows up, we will be very happy to take the place of Cameroon” the contendents divulge.

Notwithstanding, the Hosts still remain Cameroon, while deliberations are going on.

Algeria had submitted their candidature for the organisation of the 2017 AFCON, which took place in Gabon but they were not successful.

The reason why CAF could possibly move the competition from Cameroon to Algeria, is due to the lack of infrastructure. Despite the fact that there has been some infrastructural development in preparation for the Afcon, the pace is slow and might not meet up with the date line.

The 2021 and 2023 AFCONs will be hosted by the Ivory Coast and Equatorial Guinea respectively, if they don’t encounter what Cameroon is facing now, given that Zambia had showed interest to organise the 2021 edition.

This equally comes at a time when the Cameroon government is being threatened to be stripped off their hosting rights if they don’t release journalists they are keeping in detention. The reason for these menaces is the security of media men who will come to the country to cover the event. According to sources, these journalists will not have the freedom to exercise their profession.
