Unveiling Tomorrow's Cameroon Through Today's News

Breaking

LIMBE, Cameroon, May  — In a disturbing development in the murder investigation of Protus Dinga, a 52-year-old Cameroonian-German returnee, police say the prime suspect, George, has confessed to leading the plot and pointed investigators to the shallow grave where Protus was buried. The killing, which has drawn outrage nationwide and from the diaspora, is now believed to have been premeditated and financially motivated.

According to police sources, during interrogation at the crime scene, George identified a freshly dug patch of earth as the burial site. Dressed in a black basketball jersey and surrounded by heavily armed officers and onlookers, George confirmed the grave had been prepared before luring Protus to the site. He further claimed the victim owed him approximately 4 million CFA francs — a claim investigators are now working to verify.

Protus, who had relocated from Germany to Limbe with his wife to invest in property and live in retirement, was lured to the land site under false pretenses. George told him someone was trespassing and urged him to bring official documents. Upon arrival, Protus was ambushed by four accomplices, had his throat slit, and was buried.

Images from the crime scene show forensic teams and large crowds at the site. One image captures police and community members standing solemnly around the disturbed ground, where the body was exhumed. Another viral photo shows health officials in hazmat suits retrieving the remains, while bystanders react emotionally.

George allegedly fled the scene after the killing, taking Protus’ car and personal belongings. He was later seen drinking at a beer parlour in Sokolo before being tracked by police and arrested. His cooperation led to the arrest of all four accomplices.

Public reaction continues to intensify, with TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube flooded with comments demanding justice. The hashtag #JusticeForProtus is now trending in Cameroon.

Local leaders and diaspora organizations have called on the Cameroonian government to enact stronger protections for returning citizens and crack down on fraudulent land dealings. Authorities are expected to formally charge the suspects with premeditated murder, conspiracy, and theft.
