Crucial Step Toward Stability? IDB-backed Project Aims to Rebuild Anglophone Regions
On December 18, 2023, in Yaoundé, Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute marked the commencement of a pivotal phase for the North-West and South-West regions of Cameroon. He officially inaugurated the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) Support Project under the Presidential Plan for the reconstruction and development of the two Anglophone regions.
This project, endowed with a sum of 23.7 billion XAF, with 21 billion XAF provided by the IDB, aims to rebuild and rehabilitate crucial basic infrastructure in these areas that have been grappling with a socio-political crisis since late 2016.{loadmoduleid 378}
The infrastructure slated for rehabilitation or reconstruction will impact vital sectors such as education, health, livestock, agriculture, housing, and electricity. They will be deployed across 47 municipalities in the two targeted regions, specifically benefiting 24 municipalities in the North-West and 23 in the South-West.
This initiative follows the commitment made by the IDB in May 2023 during the 48th annual meeting of the institution's board of governors. On that occasion, IDB President Muhammad Al Jasser signed a loan agreement of 32.250 million euros, equivalent to 21.155 billion XAF, with the Cameroonian Minister of the Economy, Alamine Ousmane Mey.
This loan supports the implementation of the Presidential Plan for reconstruction and development, for which the government struggled to mobilize the necessary funds, estimated at 154 billion XAF. The plan aims to alleviate the devastating effects of the crisis on the populations and economies of the North-West and South-West regions, focusing on restoring social cohesion, rebuilding basic infrastructure, and revitalizing the local economy.
The launch of this project is perceived as a crucial step toward resolving persistent crises in these regions, offering tangible hope for improved living conditions and the gradual restoration of socio-economic stability.{loadmoduleid 377}
