Babessi Deputy Mayor Assassinated: Unrest Grips Anglophone Cameroon
Babessi, Ngokuntuja Department - In a brazen act of violence, the 2nd deputy mayor of Babessi, Mr. Nkwato Solomon, was shot dead at his residence in the early hours of Saturday, March 23rd, 2024.
Local reports suggest the gunmen were heavily armed and fled the scene after the attack.
Babessi lies within the Anglophone region of Cameroon, an area experiencing an ongoing armed conflict between government forces and rebels seeking independence for their territory, which they call Ambazonia. While no official claim of responsibility has been made, unconfirmed reports from Le Courrier du Cameroun, a local newspaper, allege the "Unity Warriors," a rebel group, may be behind the attack.
This developing story is being closely monitored by authorities. Investigators are currently at the scene gathering evidence and piecing together the events leading up to the assassination. We will continue to provide updates as they become available.
Key Questions Remain
- Motive for the attack: Was this a targeted assassination or a random act of violence?
- Identity of the gunmen: Can authorities confirm the involvement of the "Unity Warriors" or another group?
- Impact on the region: Will this incident escalate tensions in the already volatile Anglophone region?
We will continue to investigate these questions and provide further reports as details emerge.
