Reactions After Deadly Ambazonian Ambush: Six Gendarmes Killed in Eyumojock, South-West Cameroon
EYUMOJOCK, Cameroon — The tranquil town of Eyumojock, nestled in the South-West region, was shattered by a brutal attack on May 11, 2024. In an ambush orchestrated by ambazonian militiamen, six gendarmes from the Eyumojock gendarmerie brigade lost their lives.
The incident has further escalated tensions in the ongoing conflict between Ambazonian rebels and government forces.
The Ambush
According to local reports, the gendarmes were part of a group led by the . They were patrolling the Eyumojock-Mamfe road when they fell into the rebels’ trap. The ambush was swift and deadly, leaving six officers dead. Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as gunfire erupted, and the gendarmes fought valiantly against overwhelming odds.
Reactions from Ambazonian activists
Ambazonian activist Mark Bareta confirmed the reports, attributing the success of the operation to “valuable intelligence” from Ambazonian forces in Manyu. The elimination of a Cameroonian commander and five associates showcased the rebels’ effectiveness. A video shared by Bareta displayed a cache of weapons seized from the fallen soldiers.
Cho Ayaba Lucas, another prominent Ambazonian activist, celebrated the outcome, declaring that “Ambazonia is unconquerable.” His social media post emphasized the rebels’ determination and resilience.
Government’s Response
Cameroonian Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute expressed outrage over the loss of gendarme officers in Eyumojock. He called on the local population to collaborate closely with security forces to prevent further attacks. The government’s stance remains firm, emphasizing the need to maintain law and order in the face of rebellion.
Eyumojock: A Flashpoint
Eyumojock has become a hotspot in the South-West region, witnessing multiple attacks attributed to Ambazonian rebels since the conflict began in 2017. The area’s vulnerability stems from its strategic location near the border with Nigeria and its dense forests, which provide cover for rebel activities.
In June 2020, Eyumojock experienced a similar tragedy when five soldiers lost their lives during an ambush by rebels. The recent attack underscores the ongoing struggle for control in this volatile region.
As the sun sets over Eyumojock, grieving families mourn their fallen loved ones, and the scars of violence deepen. The conflict continues to exact a heavy toll on both sides, leaving communities caught in the crossfire. The international community watches closely, hoping for a peaceful resolution to a crisis that has already claimed too many lives.
