Maize production in the world is relatively stable in 2017 according to the American ministry of agriculture (USDA) though still inferior to the 2016 record. The US and China are the world's greatest producers of the cereal with three quarter of world reserve.
Classified 13th producer in Africa, Cameroon is also witnessing a certain level of progress in maize production despite the shortage registered in 2011. Though production statistics for 2016 has not yet been published, according to provisional fIgures of the ministry of agriculture and rural development (MINADER), in 2015, maize production stood at 2148679 tons with an increase of 4.2% as compared to 2014. This progress which unfortunately does not satisfy local demand stands 2.5 million tons as of MINADER and 3 million tons according to findings from FAO. This gives a deficit of 600,000 tons and to curb this deficit, mr Biya's regime has resorted to importing the cereal. A Cameroonian based economic news paper, EcoMatin, reports that the country imports in huge quantity to feed its population, adding that, Biya's government imported 11270 tons of maize in 2013 which worth more than fcfa 540 millions.
The national investment promotion agency on its part indicates that the cost of imported maize and its by-products stands at fcfa150 billion on an annual bases. Agronomists accounts for such deficit as resulting from poor government policies, lack of mechanization of the sector, high cost of fertilizers, and the reluctance of farmers to use improved maize seeds and above all, the problem of farming land which is not accessible to all due to the outdated land law in Cameroon.

La Republique du Cameroun has signed two loan agreements worth FCFA 88 billion with the French Development Agency.
The money is meant to support agricultural development in the country, they say.
The deal was reached on Friday in Yaoundé.
One of the major targets of the money will be promoting vocational training, officials say.
The Biya regime has stepped up borrowing in recent months, as it complains of financial difficulties.
It has borrowed from the Islamic Development Bank, the IMF, and Spain in under six months.
Apparently Biya and his government have a couple issues to handle. The fight against Boko Haram, the battle to stifle the Anglophone Struggle financially and physically, and mismanagement of state money are some of the problems plaguing our little country.

The Cameroonian government is preoccupied by the delay in construction works of the first phase of the motorway Yaoundé-Douala, which will connect the two capitals in the country. At least this is what emerged from a meeting just organised by the Minister of Public Works, Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi, contract awarding authority of the first 60 Km of this motorway infrastructure, with the management of the company China First Highway Engineering Co Ltd (CFHEC). Indeed, we learned, after having used 32 months out of the 48 months scheduled for the delivery of the first phase of this project, CFHEC has only completed 40% of the work at June end, against 30% as of last 31 January.
In other words, during the last six months, work on the site of this motorway has only progressed by 10%, due to difficulties having even led to a complete halt during some time. The fault, we learn, is tardiness attributed more to the State, itself, rather than to the Chinese company tasked with realising this project.
Among the obstacles which are slowing down the conduct of work on this motorway, are mainly cited the parsimonious payment of the Cameroonian counterpart, and the failure to release the rights of way on several kilometres to be constructed, due to delays in paying compensation to evicted populations.
As a reminder, the Yaoundé-Douala motorway construction project aims to build a modern road network of around 215 km between the two most important cities in Cameroon. The overall cost of the works is estimated at FCfa 284 billion.
