Bamenda Market Project Faces Allegations of Embezzlement and Delay

The city of Bamenda finds itself embroiled in controversy as accusations of embezzlement and bureaucratic delay mar the long-awaited construction of modern markets in the area.

A rift between current and former municipal officials, coupled with bureaucratic hurdles, has left residents questioning the fate of critical development projects.

At the center of the storm is Paul Achobang, the current city mayor, who accuses his predecessor, Vincent Ndumu Nji, of misappropriating funds earmarked for the construction of an ultramodern main market in Bamenda. Achobang's allegations, made during a press conference showcasing completed and ongoing projects, shed light on the intricacies of municipal governance and financial management.

The genesis of the market construction dates back to 2014 when the Prime Minister of Cameroon initiated a partnership contract aimed at modernizing three commercial centers in Bamenda. However, a decade later, residents remain frustrated by the lack of progress, with no signs of construction work commencing on any of the proposed markets.

Of particular concern is the revelation that indigenous economic stakeholders, such as the Cameroon Development and Investment Group (CAMDIG) and local credit unions, were poised to play significant roles in the project. Despite CAMDIG's retention as the private partner for the construction, operation, and maintenance of the markets, bureaucratic delays have hindered progress, leaving stakeholders disillusioned and projects stagnant.

Michael Mubang, CEO of CAMDIG, lamented the unnecessary delays in the project's completion, citing bureaucratic inefficiencies and a lack of political will as major impediments. Urging the city mayor to convene the Special Commission responsible for overseeing the project, Mubang emphasized the urgent need for action to break the impasse and advance development initiatives.

As residents voice their frustrations and demand accountability, questions loom over the fate of Bamenda's market development projects. The city's future hangs in the balance as municipal officials grapple with allegations of corruption and bureaucratic inertia, underscoring the urgent need for transparent and accountable governance to drive progress and prosperity in the region.
