Cameroon: CPDM Lawmakers Summoned for Announcement on Senate, National Assembly Leadership
YAOUNDE, Cameroon - March 21, 2024
Cameroon's ruling Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM) lawmakers have been summoned to a meeting on Friday at 10:00 a.m. local time at the party's central
committee. The agenda is expected to include an announcement by President Paul Biya on his selections for the presidents of the Senate and National Assembly.
This development follows speculation and some anxiety within the CPDM regarding the leadership positions. The current Senate President, Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, has been hospitalized in Yaoundé, raising questions about his future in the role.
"The situation of the president of the Senate remains worrying," a source within the CPDM told Reuters on condition of anonymity. "There is uncertainty about his health and his ability to continue."
The meeting comes a day after Jean NKUETE, another prominent figure in the CPDM, was received by President Biya at the presidential palace. The details of their discussion were not made public.
Analysts anticipate a tense atmosphere at Friday's meeting, with lawmakers eager to learn Biya's decisions on the key leadership positions.
