Elections Cameroon Targets Youth and Women for Voter Registration Drive

Elections Cameroon (Elecam) has embarked on a targeted campaign aimed at enrolling young people and women aged 20 and over into the national electoral register ahead of the upcoming elections.

With the annual period dedicated to the revision of electoral lists in full swing, Elecam is committed to bolstering voter registration figures, setting a goal of reaching 7.5 million registered voters by August 31, 2024, building upon the existing count of 7,361,875 voters recorded as of August 31, 2023.

Elecam's proactive approach involves deploying teams into the field since January 2, 2024, to engage directly with communities and facilitate the registration process. Recognizing the importance of broadening participation among underrepresented groups, particularly women, Elecam has intensified its outreach efforts. This includes strategically placing enrollment kits at key gathering points, notably during significant events like the March 8 parade and political party functions, as well as conducting outreach visits to markets to ensure accessibility for women.

Leveraging the influence of web personalities like Moustik Karismatik, Elecam aims to engage tech-savvy youth and encourage their involvement in the electoral process. Additionally, innovative approaches such as relocating enrollment kits to mosques and university campuses aim to facilitate registration among young adults in proximity to their daily activities.
