Kamto's Call for Transparency: Where Is Activist Ramon Cotta?
Yaoundé, August 8, 2024— Maurice Kamto, leader of the opposition party MRC, has urgently called on the Cameroonian government to provide concrete evidence confirming that activist Steve Akam, also known as Ramon Cotta, is still alive.
The activist’s disappearance has sparked intense scrutiny and concern following his reported abduction in Gabon and subsequent transfer to Cameroon.
Ramon Cotta, who was last seen in chains and visibly frightened in the presence of Gabonese and Cameroonian authorities, has not been heard from in over four weeks. Kamto’s appeal underscores the need for transparency and adherence to legal procedures, emphasizing that intelligence services must operate within the bounds of the law and respect the judicial process.
Kamto’s demand comes amid growing anxiety over Cotta's fate. The activist was reportedly kidnapped in Gabon and extradited to Cameroon, but there has been no confirmation of his condition or whereabouts since. Kamto has urged the government to produce proof of Cotta’s well-being, reminding officials that legal norms must be upheld during such operations.
Adding to the gravity of the situation, Kamto’s concerns are compounded by a tragic precedent. The case of Samuel Wazizi, an anglophone journalist who was detained, tortured, and killed by security forces before being buried in a secret grave, has heightened fears about Cotta’s safety. Wazizi’s disappearance and death last year remain a dark chapter in Cameroon’s human rights record.
Cotta’s family, who have not received any information about his status for weeks, is also in distress. Kamto’s plea reflects widespread unease and calls for accountability, as the activist’s ongoing silence continues to draw scrutiny and demands for justice.
The government’s response to Kamto’s call will be closely watched as the situation develops, with expectations for clarity and respect for human rights becoming increasingly urgent.
