Keeping them Honest: Only in a Banana Republic like Cameroon
Despite the fact that Senatorial elections are scheduled for March 25, 2018, Senate President, Niat Njifenji has gone ahead to convoke the upper legislative chamber to its first ordinary session beginning March 2, 2018; a session that is supposed to last for 30 days.
This begs the question: will these Sinators abandon the session to go on campaign since they are up for re-election? And if the 70 Sinators who are elected go on campaigns, what happens to the other 30 who are appointed by Biya? And come to think of it; the Sinators will be elected by an electoral college of Mayors and Councillors, whose initial mandate after the 1996 municipal elections expired for two years, hence their continuous stay in office that ended with the twin Legislative and Municipal elections in 2013 was illegal.
I think it was Lord Denning who said you cannot put something on nothing and then expect it to stand. An illegal electoral college can only elect an illegal Senate. Who says the impossible is not Cameroonian?
