Robert Kona’s Political Dance and the Fragile Balance of Power in Cameroon
Amid internal tensions within his political party, Robert Kona, founder of the PCRN, was photographed in front of an effigy of Paul Biya, sparking speculation about a possible alliance with the ruling CPDM party.
Rumors of a rapprochement between Kona and the CPDM are circulating, fueled by images of Kona alongside Mohamadou Bayero Fadil, a wealthy businessman close to the ruling party. The presence of a banner featuring President Paul Biya in the background of these pictures further increases suspicions of an alliance.
This situation weakens Kona's position in his power struggle with Cabral Libii for control of the PCRN. The matter is already pending before the courts, and this new controversy risks discrediting Kona in the eyes of the party's militants and sympathizers, according to seasoned political observers.
Additionally, the founder of the PCRN announced the holding of a congress on May 25 and 26, 2024, in Maroua, Far North Region, where Cabral Libii has been barred from participating. Armand Okol, the national secretary for Communication and Propaganda of the PCRN and a close associate of Cabral Libii, questioned Robert Kona's legitimacy in convening a party congress. According to him, since the founder has been expelled from the party, this announcement holds no value.
