Unveiling Tomorrow's Cameroon Through Today's News

Breaking

Amid swirling rumors about the potential candidacies of Franck Biya and Samuel Eto’o in the upcoming 2025 presidential election, both figures have unequivocally reaffirmed their support for the incumbent, President Paul Biya, and the ruling Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (RDPC).

Samuel Eto’o, the President of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT), once again dismissed any notions of a presidential bid. In a public statement on June 13, 2024, he declared, “Yes, in 2018, I voted for President Paul Biya. And I maintain my unwavering support for him. I stand by this.” This statement effectively quashes any speculation regarding his political ambitions.

In an interview with France 24 in February, Eto’o had already clarified his stance: “Most of the problems I encounter are because people think I want to become the head of state in Cameroon. Today, I have so many things to do that it is not something that crosses my mind.” Despite calls for his candidacy from various segments of the population, Eto’o remains committed to his role in sports, distancing himself from political aspirations.

Similarly, Franck Biya, the eldest son of President Paul Biya, has also ruled out any intention of running for the presidency. During an official engagement in Nice, France, on November 6, 2023, he stated, “I do not wish to intervene from a political standpoint because, politically, I have a duty of reserve that you undoubtedly understand very well (…) We have what is called the natural leader of the party who remains the same. We must stay in his wake and try to support him.”

These declarations from Samuel Eto’o and Franck Biya dispel rumors and confirm their unwavering support for President Paul Biya. Although the President has not yet announced his intentions for the 2025 election, it is clear that his key allies are firmly aligned with him, reinforcing stability and continuity within the RDPC.
