Breaking News — Bloodshed and Rising Tensions Across Cameroon as Biya Regime Opens Fire on Protesters
[DOUALA, Oct 26] – At least four civilians were confirmed dead late Sunday in the New Bell and Nkolouloun neighborhoods of Douala after security forces opened fire on peaceful demonstrators calling for the restoration of the people’s mandate in favor of opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary.
The shootings, described by witnesses as unprovoked, occurred around 3:45 p.m. local time when uniformed men arrived in pickup trucks and began firing live rounds to disperse protesters chanting pro-Tchiroma slogans. The victims, mostly young men, were among thousands who have flooded streets across Cameroon since early afternoon in what observers now call the largest anti-regime demonstrations in decades.
The Cameroon Concord news team has confirmed parallel mobilizations in Garoua, Maroua, Bertoua, Ngaoundéré, Meiganga, and Bangangté, where crowds defied curfews and security intimidation to demand “the truth of the ballot box.” In Garoua, demonstrators attempted to march toward the Lamido’s palace before being blocked by heavily armed gendarmes. Reports from the city suggest that military units have since encircled the residence of Issa Tchiroma, the man who declared victory based on official polling-station records (procès-verbaux) publicly released on Google Drive.
Security insiders told Cameroon Concord that a sniper unit has been deployed near the residence of Yerima Dewa, about 200 meters from Tchiroma’s compound. The move, sources say, may signal preparations for a coordinated assault — a charge the regime has not denied.
In Bertoua and Garoua-Boulai, spontaneous protests have also erupted. Witnesses describe hundreds marching peacefully with flags and placards reading “Respect the people’s choice” before riot police intervened. Similar scenes were recorded in the West Region, particularly in Bangangté and Bandja, where police used tear gas to disperse demonstrators but failed to quell the growing unrest.
Political analysts say the escalating repression reflects the desperation of an exhausted regime unwilling to confront the magnitude of its electoral loss. Human rights monitors have decried the excessive use of force, warning that the government’s violent response risks plunging the nation into further instability.
By late evening, intermittent internet disruptions were again reported nationwide — a tactic critics say is part of the government’s effort to silence evidence of the crisis.
As of press time, the Cameroon Concord political desk has verified that the military continues to surround Issa Tchiroma’s home in Garoua. Residents have been urged to remain vigilant, as tension remains at boiling point ahead of the Constitutional Council’s expected announcement of official results.
