Cameroon’s 2025 Presidential Race Draws Record 81 Candidates as ELECAM Closes Filing — See Who’s Running
The race for Cameroon’s highest office has opened with an unprecedented 81 preliminary candidacies. Elections Cameroon (ELECAM) closed the submission window at midnight on 21 July and released the complete roster a few hours later. The figure surpasses every previous presidential tally since the 2012 Electoral Code set today’s requirements.
Opposition groups view the surge as proof of public impatience with a 43‑year status quo. The ruling CPDM calls it “crowd‑marketing” by fringe parties. Whatever the motive, each name must now survive scrutiny by the Constitutional Council, which has 15 days to confirm or reject dossiers.
Key rules in play
• A candidate must be a Cameroonian by origin, at least 35 years old, and resident in the country for the past twelve months.
• Investment by a political party or 300 signatures from elected officials is mandatory.
• A non‑refundable deposit of 30 million FCFA is paid up‑front; it is reimbursed only to those who earn at least ten percent of the national vote.
Strategic filings
Maurice Kamto’s decision to resign from the MRC, join MANIDEM and file under that label is widely viewed as a tactical response to administrative pressure aimed at his former party. MANIDEM leader Anicet Ekane called the alliance “a higher duty to the nation.” Meanwhile, CPDM minister Grégoire Owona dismissed Kamto’s move as divisive, even as cracks appeared inside his own camp: long‑time RDPC deputy NJIKEU Hortense resigned this week, accusing party leaders of deafness to grassroots concerns.
Below is ELECAM’s full preliminary list. Dates indicate when each dossier was stamped at the Directorate‑General of Elections.
