Pope Francis has asked for forgiveness for the “sins and failings of the Church and its members” during Rwanda’s 1994 genocide, saying the violence had “disfigured the face” of the Roman Catholic Church.
In a meeting with Rwandan President Paul Kagame at the Vatican, Francis said he hoped his apology would help promote peace in the African country, which was torn apart by genocide in 1994, and contribute to a “purification of memory”.
The Catholic Church in Rwanda last year publicly sought forgiveness for the part played by some of its members, who it said had fanned the ethnic hatred that led to the killings.
Some massacres took place in churches where people who had sought refuge were killed by militias.
The Vatican said in a statement that the pope had “implored anew God’s forgiveness for the sins and failings of the Church and its members, among whom priests, and religious men and women who succumbed to hatred and violence, betraying their own evangelical mission”.
Some 800,000 people from the ethnic Tutsi minority as well as moderates from the Hutu majority were massacred in the 1994 genocide. Kagame, a Tutsi, led a rebel force to halt the slaughter.

The prosecutor, accusing the suspects of blackmail, added that they “unlawfully demanded the immediate payment of $1million to Otobo by Apostle Johnson Suleiman, the president and founder of Omega Fire Ministry Worldwide, else she would call a press conference and accuse him of committing adultery with her and thereafter kill him.”
The prosecutor claimed Stephanie threatened to call a press conference, where she planned to accuse Suleman of adultery and threatening to kill her.
He added that the offences are punishable under sections 411, 301 and 303 of the criminal law of Lagos state 2015.
Stephanie Otobo and her co-defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.
They were then granted bail in the sum of N100,000 each. The case was then adjourned to April 27 for commencement of trial.

Pope Francis has said the Catholic church may consider ordaining married men who could potentially then work in remote areas faced with a shortage of priests.
“We must think about whether viri probati are a possibility,” Francis said, referring to older married men who are already involved in church business.
“Then we have to decide what tasks they can take on, for example in remote communities,” he added in an interview with German weekly Die Zeit.
Many in the church believe, given the lack of priests in many places, that a new path to ordination should be opened.
They think that in addition to priests who take a vow of celibacy, older married men with a long commitment to the church could also be considered.
Pope Francis said in May 2014 that “there are married priests in the church” citing Anglican ministers who converted, Coptic Catholics and the priests of some eastern churches.
The church, and notably the current pope’s predecessor Benedict XVI, had previously said that celibacy was not a matter of inflexible church dogma unlike, for example, the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
However, Francis said allowing priests in training to choose whether or not to be celibate was “not the solution”.

A Lagos State Magistrate, has denied a request to remand one Wisdom Godstime and Stephanie Otobo, a lady in an explosive case who claims to have had an affair with Apostle Johnson Suleiman, founder of Omega Fire Ministry Worldwide.
The judge ruled that there is no substantial evidence to deny Stephanie her fundamental right to freedom, and hence granted her bail on liberal terms.
Justice Kikelomo said the matter was a case between two Nigerians and it did not matter if one of the parties was a man of God. She granted bail on conditions that the accused person deposit a sum of N100,000, with two sureties in like sum who must be gainfully employed.

It was will Stephanie was trying to withdraw money from the account at a UBA bank after her ATM refused to work, that she was arrested on orders of Apostle Suleman who had reported her of being a blackmailer.
After her arrest, Stephanie filed a lawsuit against Apostle Suleman demanding to be paid N500million as damages for not honoring his promise to marry her and for harassment and threat to her life.
In the letter to the Inspector-General of Police, Keyamo Chambers said Stephanie was arrested on March 3 at a UBA branch in Anthony Village by heavily armed policemen from Federal Criminal Investigations Department (FCID), Alagbon.
