Emilio Nsue, Former Spanish Football Prodigy Now Nzalang's Leading Scorer
The Equatorial Guinean striker continues to dominate defenses in his path since the onset of this CAN. As the all-time leading scorer for his national team, he has been an indispensable figure for the Nzalang Nacional for eleven years, set to face Guinea this Sunday for a spot in the quarterfinals. Amidst the speculation of who will be the top scorer of AFCON 2024—Mohamed Salah? Sadio Mané? Victor Osimhen?—reassess your predictions, as the current leading goal-scorer is none other than Emilio Nsue, an Equatorial Guinean forward presently plying his trade in the Spanish third division.
While his name might not resonate widely, in Spain, Emilio Nsue is no stranger. Born in Majorca to an Equatorial Guinean father and a Spanish mother, young Emilio honed his skills in the Spanish youth selections. Once a promising talent in Iberian football, he secured the UEFA European Under-19 Championship in 2007 and the UEFA European Under-21 Championship in 2011. Turning professional in 2006 with RCD Majorca at the age of 17, a club for which he played 151 matches over six seasons, the young player struggled to fulfill the high expectations placed upon him at the highest level. This led him on a circuitous journey through English Championship clubs and Cyprus.
Leading the Goal-Scoring Chart With a hat-trick against Guinea-Bissau and a brace against Ivory Coast, Emilio Nsue currently stands atop the goal-scoring chart, comfortably ahead of Egyptian Mostafa Mohamed and Baghdad Bounedjah (3 goals), who has already exited the competition with Algeria. "To be honest, I find it a bit hard to believe; these things happen in football. For me, it's a dream; I'm currently in superb form," rejoiced the striker after the qualification against the Elephants. This marks a near-revival for the player after a lackluster CAN 2022 in Cameroon where, out of form, he had scarcely played. At that time, Nsue was unemployed and seeking a club, and the memory of a missed tournament lingered bitterly. "This African Cup that I experienced so painfully gave me the strength to believe that I could not fail in this one, that I had to leave with a better taste in my mouth," he recounted to AFP.
The Seasoned Sage of Nzalang Nacional The all-time leading scorer of Nzalang Nacional ("the lightning" in Fang and "national" in Spanish, Ed.), with 22 goals in 43 appearances since his debut in 2013, Emilio Nsué is a stalwart of the team. "He knew that the supporters were not pleased with his CAN 2022 performance. I gave him my trust again, and now he is the top scorer for Equatorial Guinea. He is a true professional," explains the Equatorial Guinean coach.
Juan Micha does not hide his satisfaction at seeing his leading striker regain top form. With eleven years spent with Equatorial Guinea, Nsue, who also captains the team, now serves as a venerable sage, and his role within the group extends far beyond scoring goals. "For us, Emilio is the player who brings us all his experience and advises the younger players, as there are many in this selection," details the coach. He plays in the Spanish third division, and it is not just about football for him.
