Indomitable Lions: Kombouaré Eyes National Team Role After Consultant Gig
France - Former Paris Saint-Germain manager Antoine Kombouaré has set his sights on a national team coaching position, following his recent stint as a consultant for Amazon Prime Video.
Kombouaré's name had previously been linked to the vacant Cameroon head coach role, following the departure of Rigobert Song. While those rumors subsided with his consulting role, Kombouaré has now confirmed his openness to leading a national team, particularly an African nation.
Ready for a New Challenge
In an interview with L'Equipe, the 60-year-old coach expressed his desire to return to an active coaching role, open to both club and national team opportunities. "If there is a national team, I am ready," Kombouaré declared. "One of my goals is to participate in a World Cup as a coach. It would be nice to experience that, to have a country behind you."
Previous Offers Declined
Kombouaré revealed that he had previously received offers to coach African national teams but declined them at the time. "We must not lie to ourselves," he admitted. "Six or seven years ago, I had offers of African selections but I refused, I wanted to continue living everyday life."
Challenges of International Management
He acknowledged the greater challenges associated with managing a national team compared to a club side. "The selection is harder," Kombouaré explained. "There is more pressure from the media, from supporters, from politicians."
Will Kombouaré Get His Wish?
With his renewed interest in national team management, it remains to be seen if Kombouaré will receive an offer that entices him away from the comfort of club management and into the pressure cooker of international football.
