ABUJA (Reuters) - Nigeria’s government on Monday summoned a representative of the the U.S. ambassador to explain reported remarks by President Donald Trump that immigrants from Africa and Haiti come from “shithole countries”, the foreign ministry said.
Foreign Minister Geoffrey Onyeama “sought clarification on the veracity or otherwise of the substance of the remarks, stressing that if they were true, they were deeply hurtful, offensive and unacceptable”, the ministry said in a statement.
Trump reportedly made the remarks at a private meeting with lawmakers on immigration on Thursday. A U.S. senator who attended the gathering said the president used “vile, vulgar” language, including repeatedly using the word “shithole” when speaking about African countries.
The Nigerian foreign ministry statement noted the “very warm and cordial relations that presently exist” between Nigeria and the U.S.
The United States, represented by Deputy Chief of Mission David J. Young as the ambassador was not in Nigeria, said there were contradictory accounts as to whether the remarks were made, the statement said.
In a separate statement, a U.S. embassy spokesman said Young “reiterated the excellent relations that exist between the United States and Nigeria and they discussed future cooperation between the two countries”.
The U.S. president on Friday denied using such derogatory language. But he has been widely condemned in many African countries and by international rights organisations. African Union countries demanded an apology on Friday.

The elite of Manyu Division led by the Minister in Charge of Special Duties at the Presidency of the Republic, Victor Arrey Mengot have laid down a plan to physically eliminate North Westerners who have acquired property and are resident in Manyu.
Mengot, Tabetando, Hon. Mrs Okpu and others have resolved to also destroy the properties acquired by North Westerners in Upper Banyang subdivision in several acres of plantations in revenge for what they call a "graffi" war exported to Manyu to discredit and bar them from occupying juicy positions in Yaounde.
Mengot and other CPDM Elite of Manyu are accusing Prime Minister Philemon Yang and his CPDM cohorts of the North West of sponsoring Cho Ayaba and his ADF Force that was waging attacks against security forces in the North West to transfer their operations to Manyu, so that he, Yang and other "graffi" top guns will maintain their high jobs in government at the detriment of Manyu.
The plan, my informant noted, was crafted after President Paul Biya reportedly expressed disgust at the Manyu elite for being unable to halt the massive killing of security forces in that division.
Biya reportedly expressed open regrets at the death of late Peter Agbor Tabi, outlining emphatically that if Agbor Tabi were alive, Manyu would never have become the bastion of Anglophone resistance.
To give the evil plan flesh, the elite have also agreed to organize themselves village-by-village so as to easily identify the targets and execute them, destroying and looting their property along.
In line with that approach, Hon. Mrs Okpu who is from Kembong has convened the elite of that village to a strategic planning meeting at the OIC premises in Buea this Saturday the 13th of January 2018. The Member of Parliament who has never been heard even once at the National Assembly condemning military brutality on her people aims to mobilize the elite against fellow Anglophones in her village, Kembong.
As the Kembong elite prepare to meet tomorrow, reports indicate that the Tigers of Ambazonia, the ADF and all other self defense groups that have cropped up, have set up means to identify all participants at the meeting in order to hold "private" talks with each of them after the meeting.
Some concerned Manyu elite have expressed disgust at what they consider a "diabolic" plan of self destruction to please a man who "does not care about the common man in Manyu".
This Saturday the 13th of January 2018 is thus a significant day and rendezvous in the life of the struggle for the restoration of the independence of Southern Cameroons.

Fabian left the US for Cameroon early June of 2017, on the 20th of that same month, he went to Douala to negotiate the clearance of his container from the Doaula seaport, later that evening, upon arriving his hotel, he was approached by plain cloth officers and bundled up to an unkown location.
It took over a week after his abduction for the family and well wishers, with intervention of the US embassy in Yaounde to locate his whereabouts. He was held in captivity and denied access to lawyers and his family.Trumped up charges were levied against him for inciting terror against the state, after the US embassy pressed for a fair and transparent accusation if any.
Fabian had been a critic of the brutal suppression of civil liberties in the Anglophone regions by the Biya regime. In September of 2017, four US congressmen wrote to Secretary of State Tillerson, calling on the USA government to press Paul Biya for his release.
The Biya's regime had been put under immense international pressure to release all US citizens in its detention centerS.

MONROVIA (Reuters) - Liberia’s ruling Unity Party has expelled the country’s outgoing president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who is accused by party leaders of meddling in last year’s presidential elections in which its candidate suffered a bruising defeat.
Johnson Sirleaf, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate who has been in power for 12 years, denies the party’s allegations that she held inappropriate private meetings with election magistrates before the Oct. 10 vote.
Four other party officials were also expelled, the party said in a statement distributed on Sunday.
“The behaviour of the expelled persons ... constitutes sabotage and undermined the existence of the party,” said the statement announcing the decision, which was taken by the party’s executive committee late on Saturday.
A senior official in Johnson Sirleaf’s office declined to comment on the decision. The president and other officials were not immediately available on Sunday.
Former soccer star George Weah defeated the Unity Party’s Joseph Boakai in a landslide, marking the first democratic transition of power in Liberia - a nation founded by freed American slaves - in over 70 years.
Johnson Sirleaf was not allowed to run for re-election due to constitutional term limits. A split between her and Boakai burst into the open during the campaign. [L8N1N562G]
The statement said Johnson Sirleaf and the other members had violated rules, including a requirement to support all Unity Party candidates in elections.
Weah will be sworn in later this month.
Johnson Sirleaf won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011 for helping secure peace after civil wars from 1989-2003. But her critics say she has not done enough to ease rampant poverty - a task complicated by a 2014-16 Ebola epidemic that killed thousands of Liberians.
Her administration has also faced repeated allegations of corruption and nepotism. She denies the accusations, but they resonated with many of the voters who rallied to Weah’s call for change.
Weah, who in 1995 became the only African to win FIFA World Player of the Year, now faces sky-high expectations from his base of young supporters. Others, who see him as lacking the experience and knowledge for the job, remain sceptical.
