Cameroonian football legend Samuel Eto’o has been unveiled as a campaign ambassador for President Paul Biya’s CPDM in his native Ngambé, sparking widespread uproar and disappointment. Documents circulating on social media list Eto’o among the regional campaign team for the October 2025 presidential election.

Reactions to Eto’o’s political move

Critics accuse Eto’o of betraying the hopes of millions who once idolised him as a symbol of national pride. “The mask has fallen,” one opposition voice declared, calling him an opportunist who chose personal interest over the suffering of ordinary Cameroonians. Social media quickly filled with reactions ranging from outright condemnation to reluctant defence of Eto’o’s freedom of choice.

Support and criticism

Some CPDM supporters welcomed his presence, arguing that Eto’o’s stature would energise young voters. Others, however, reminded the public that Eto’o has in the past expressed support for Biya, including during the 2018 campaign. Many accused him of reinforcing a system that has kept Cameroon under one ruler for over four decades.

Voices from the streets and online

On social media, reactions were sharp and divided. “Eto’o will tell youths to vote again for a man who gave him everything while they wait endlessly for their own chance,” wrote one commenter. Others dismissed the controversy, insisting that Eto’o was entitled to his political choice. Still, the disappointment among many fans underscored the blurred lines between football, leadership and politics in Cameroon.
