Anglophone Crisis: Tough crackdown from the authoritarian regime of president Paul Biya continues
The government of Cameroon has arrested cable network distributors in the North West Region. The men were arrested in Ndop, Ngoketunjia Division, for making SCBC Channel available for people to watch.
Monday’s action is a one in a line of crackdown measures by the government in Yaounde to silence the people of Southern Cameroon.
Previously, the people of West Cameroon suffered an internet blackout which spanned more than ninety days. Much pressure came to bear and Yaounde loosened its grip on the internet on the eve of the start of All University Games in Bamenda.
Recently the National Communication Council came out to teach media persons about what to report in the light of the unrest in Southern Cameroons. The media was warned against talking about federalism or secession, which are among the demands tabled by some of the people on strike.
Some newspapers, especially Anglophone papers, have been threatened with pending sanctions by the same council for treating the Anglophone Problem in different manner, other than what the central government expects.
A couple of Southern Cameroonian journalists are detained in Yaoundé, particularly in connection with the unrest. They include Amos Fofung, Thomas Awah Junior, Mfor Ndong, Hans Achumba, Tim Finnan,Medjo Lewis and Jean Claude Agbortem.
