Financial Turmoil at FECAFOOT: Employees Face Salary Uncertainty for the First Time in 20 Years
In an unprecedented turn of events in the last two decades, employees of the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) are set to spend the 2023 Christmas without receiving their salaries. Moreover, uncertainty looms over the payment of the traditional 13th-month salary, a ritual within the organization managing Cameroonian football.
Journalist Boris Bertolt highlighted the situation, stating, "For the first time in 20 years, FECAFOOT employees will spend Christmas without receiving their salaries. Let's not even mention the 13th-month, which is no longer in effect."
IYA Mohammed, the president of FECAFOOT, faced criticism from journalist Guibai Gatama, who remarked, "Here is a gravedigger of our football. He killed our football; we haven't achieved anything with him. The Federation's coffers were always empty. He didn't even pay December salaries on time for a joyful family celebration."
However, a commenter, Grégoire Nzomo, cautioned against comparing current challenges with the past, stating, "This irony does not please me. We know that the situation is not at its best at FECAFOOT, but we shouldn't turn it into a drama to the point of making comparisons that border on sadism. We can ask FECAFOOT to address the problem without seeking something else. Even if IYA Mohammed had good management, there were also problems at FECAFOOT during his tenure."
Guibai Gatama responded, defending the right to express opinions, stating, "Grégoire Nzomo, you were probably young when Iya Mohammed was president, and the history of his tenure... he accepted criticism with a smile even when it was unfair or sometimes exaggerated, no high words, no dancers to hunt down opponents. For the rest, and I agree with you, it is when the situation is not at its best that criticisms are strong. Is criticism forbidden? No. Under Iya, things were going well, and he was nevertheless targeted every day, and no one complained. He is in prison largely because of football because he had to step down, and some actors still gloat over this success. We have forgiven but not forgotten! So, let us express ourselves in peace.

Challenges on the Road: Fauve Azur's Struggles and Player Recoveries
Fauve Azur's journey from Yaoundé to Garoua for the 12th round of the Elite One football championship against Coton Sport faced a setback as their bus broke down 10 kilometers from the city of Ngaoundéré. Onana's Dilemma: Balancing Club Commitments and National Pride
Manchester United's goalkeeper, André Onana, is faced with a challenging decision as he contemplates joining the Lions Indomptables for the upcoming African Cup of Nations (CAN) next month. This choice could result in him missing at least four matches for Manchester United, potentially impacting his position as the team's number one choice under Erik ten Hag.
Eric Djemba-Djemba, the former Manchester United midfielder and Cameroonian football star, expressed concern that Onana might risk losing his starting position at Old Trafford if he chooses to participate in the CAN in January. Onana, who returned to the Lions Indomptables earlier this year after temporarily retiring from international football, has been a consistent presence for Manchester United, despite facing some criticism for errors.
The CAN 2023 for Cameroon kicks off on January 15, a day after Manchester United faces Tottenham and a week after a match against Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup third round. If Onana commits to participating in the CAN, he could miss at least four Manchester United matches if Cameroon advances to the final on February 11.
Djemba-Djemba acknowledged the challenges Onana faces, stating, "One of his problems is that even if he plays well next month, he then goes away for a month for the CAN. He knows that if he goes, he might lose his place at Manchester United. He must decide what's best for him. He just has to do what's best for his career."
Reflecting on his own experience at Manchester United, Djemba-Djemba emphasized the high expectations and limited time afforded to players at the club. He expressed understanding for the pressures facing Onana and offered support for the goalkeeper to overcome his initial challenges at the club.
"If he has something in mind, he won't change. Sometimes you see goalkeepers make mistakes, and the next day, they can't play because they are scared. But Onana won't change his playing style. Maybe now some fans are starting to get used to his playing style. They need more success, more wins – but for now, it's very difficult," said the 42-year-old former Lion Indomptable.
Djemba-Djemba further highlighted Onana's positive attributes as a goalkeeper and suggested that the key for him is to adapt to the English playing style, emphasizing that Onana has already proven himself in previous successful stints at Ajax and Inter. Ultimately, Djemba-Djemba urged Onana to make the decision that is best for his career and personal aspirations.
