 The Committee to Protect Journalists(CPJ) has addressed a letter to the Confederation of African Football(CAF) to urge Cameroon to release all journalists arrested for their work in the country, reports Daily Nation.

This call comes a few months to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations to be hosted by Cameroon.

The letter was addressed to Ahmad Ahmad on Friday.

CPJ, a non-profit making organisation, seeks to preserve press freedom.The organisation demands that Cameroon stops censoring and harassing the media ahead of the event.

 CPJ condemns Cameroon’s use of military tribunals to try journalists accused of terrorism related offences. This, according to CPJ, is contrary to the vision of an “Africa of good governance, democracy, and respect for human rights, justice and the rule of law” which the African Union, CAF, and other partners support in their Agenda 2063, reports Daily Nation.

The media men and women are concerned that they may not be able to cover the event freely, given that their Cameroonian colleagues “already cannot”.

Several journalists have been arrested and detained in Yaounde. Most of them are from the English-speaking part of the nation, arrested in the wake of the Anglophone Problem.

Last April the correspondent of Rfi in Cameroon was sentenced to 10 years in prison after a military tribunal ‘found him guilty of terrorism related offences’. Ahmed Abba was arrested in 2015 when he was covering the Boko Haram insurgency in the northern part of Cameroon.

Despite being African champions, coupled with the fact that, the  lions  are just from representing the Continent in a major international competition, the team has lose four places in the FIFA ranking of the month of July 2017.  Cameroon which  hitherto was ranked 2nd  in Africa, now occupies the 5th position and 36th  in the world retreating four places backward.

Some football pundits and observers predicts the premature exit of the lions from the confederations cup could be the raison d'être of the team's fall from the rankings of the world governing football body, FIFA. But on the other hand, many still finds it difficult to understand why even when Cameroon won the African cup of Nations (AFCON)2017 in Gabon, they were ranked 2nd  behind their runners up Egypt. Nonetheless, the criteria for ranking are the sole prerogative of the supreme organ in charge of the management of global football.

In the African continent, Egypt is ranked 1st and 24th  in the world, followed by the 2017 AFCON semi finalist, Senegal who is 27th in the world and DR Congo comes 3rd and 28th in the world. Tunisia, Cameroon, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Algeria, Ghana and Cote D'Ivoire makes up the 10 best teams in the continent.

Meanwhile at the global level, Germany has regained its top position as the best football team in the world following their new title as champions of the confederations cup coupled with the world cup title they are keeping. Brazil, Argentina, Portugal, Switzerland, Poland, Chile, Colombia, France and Belgium forms the bond of the ten most strongest football nations on the planet. The greatest surprise amongst the ten is Poland which is considered as a football underdog in Europe and even in the world.

The next ranking comes up on the 10th of August 2017.

WORLD CUP ambassadors to Russia, Germany, have demonstrated to the world why they are the best football team by emerging the 2017 Confederation cup winners with a young team, after beating the CONMEBOL representatives Chile, 1-0.

It was notably a tough encounter, but the silence was broken without delay at the 20^th minute by Lars Stindl’s goal. The match went on with both sides hoping to change the score in their favour especially Chile, but the gods of football were not on their side till the end.

This is Chile’s first Appearance, whereas Germany is a habitual in the competition of champions. Since its creation in 1992, some 25 years ago, the Germans have always been hoping to complete their football prowess with at least a confederations cup title, which they didn’t get until today.

The world has been taken by surprise by this victory because, almost all of the German big names in the football bonanza like; Thomas Muller, Tony Kroos, Mesut Ozil, and Mario Gotze were nowhere to be found in the selection. Nevertheless, their absence didn’t stop their younger ones led by Julian Draxler to keep the banner flying in victory.

Another victory today was that of Portugal. They thrashed Mexico 2-1 to occupy the third position of the Russian confederations cup. This happened in the absence of Christiano Ronaldo on the pitch and with the giving of red cards to two players, one from each of the sides; Nelsinho from Portugal and Raul Jimenez from Chile.

This competition ends with Cameroon who represented Africa, coming back with nothing to show for, as they were kicked out in the first stage.

After today, it is only in 2021 that another competition of Champions will be organised. This ought to normally take place in Qater, who will host the 2022 world cup, but due to climatic complications, it was moved to an Asian Football Confederation (AFC) country which is yet to be known.
