Prof. Titus Edzoa, leader of the progressive wing of the ruling Cameroon Peoples Democratic Movement, an organization dedicated to protesting the Cameroon's government’s policy of legalizing corruption was released in Yaounde after 17 year in prison.
Believing that non-violent measures would be successful, Edzoa and a host of other former barons of the ruling CPDM party intend to challenge the Biya government in the 2018 presidential elections. Titus Edzoa was arrested and sentenced to 17 years in prison. He was convicted a second time for corruption. He received another 20 years sentence and was held at the National Gendarmerie Headquarters in Yaounde.
On the notorious Gendarmarie Headquarters in Yaounde,Prof Titus Edzoa lived in a tiny cell, received meager rations and performed hard labor like the Great Nelson Mandela. The Cameroonian people now believe that his 17 years in prison became the crucible which transformed him. Through his intelligence as a Professor of Medicine, charm and dignified defiance, Edzoa intends to assume the Cameroonian leadership and bring about the intensive and productive change badly required in Cameroon.
Many senior Cameroonian elite including the leader of the main opposition party, Ni John Fru Ndi, led an international movement to free Edzoa. Many countries including the United Nations stated that he was a political prisoner. The Cameroonian dictator offered to release Edzoa, who had been moved from Komdengui Central Prison in Yaounde to the National Gendarmerie Headquarters on the condition that he renounced revealing secrets of the ruling CPDM hegemony. Edzoa, like Nelson Mandela refused, saying, “Prisoners cannot enter into contracts. Only free men can negotiate.”
In France, Hollande became president and began to dismantle the policies of President Biya's victimization policies and pressed for the release Prof. Titus Edzoa. Edzoa was realeased after 17 years in prison. In this exclusive interview with Cameroon Concord's Soter Tarh Agbaw-Ebai, Edzoa believes now is the time to intensify the struggle on all fronts. Edzoa says to relax our efforts now would be a mistake which generations to come will not able to forgive.

The 25th of January 2016 is a day that Cameroon will never forget. Our nation and its people both at home and in the diaspora experienced one of the deadliest attacks in terms of loss of life and injuries. The attacks deep inside the homeland came from the Nigerian Islamic sect, Boko Haram. To be sure, four suicide bombers including young girls, blew themselves up in a market square located in the beautiful town of Bodo in the Far North region. Agents of the Cameroon Concord Intelligence Unit operating in Maroua, the capital of the Far North region reported that 32 people were killed including the four suicide bombers. Correspondingly, more than sixty innocent Cameroonian citizens were wounded-this is the price we are paying for being neighbors to a country where no leader takes responsibility, no leader ever dare to apologize to us and no leader pays compensation.
Since January the 2nd 2016, the lifestyle of our people in the Far North and the East regions has been disrupted following the rhythm of incursions by members of Boko Haram and the so called rebels from the Central African Republic. Within the last 26 days, the Nigerian Islamic sect, Boko Haram have conducted 19 attacks in the departments of Logone and Chari, Mayo-Sava and Mayo-Tsanaga in the Far North region of Cameroon without any strong condemnation from the APC led government of Buhari in Nigeria. These vicious and malicious attacks have claimed the lives of 74 Cameroonian citizens. Economically, the material losses are enormous for our people and also for our defense forces. Our chief correspondent in Abuja, Nigeria hinted that it is all business as usual. Retired General Buhari simply does not care about a terrorist group that his quest for power helped in creating in Northern Nigeria. He is everything in today's Nigeria including acting as Head of State and Minister for Petroleum.
The Boko Haram war that began in 2013, has largely been mismanaged by successive Nigerian military officers who go around with loud sounding nothing titles as Brigadier Generals. The loss of life is getting heavier since the beginning of 2016. We of this publication believe and fervently too that the time has come for our political leadership to consider invading the Northern regions of Nigeria. We have been fed political rhetoric from Abuja that Boko Haram will soon be a thing of the past. However, during this year and January alone, Boko Haram has killed more Cameroonian citizens that cancer, HIV, malaria, Hepatitis B and C combined. Our brothers, sisters and children in the Far North region most affected by these Boko Haram atrocities have lost sleep. A recent explosion at the 1st sector of the Joint Multinational Task Force against Boko Haram headed by an inexperienced Nigerian army general saw our people;women and children escaping towards the mountains. They are aware that we are facing an enemy that does not sleep. We of Cameroon Concord understand that Boko Haram is now a big business in Nigeria and has eventually made many Nigerian citizens billionaires.
In a country where elections are rigged even in Boko Haram held areas, where armed robbery is a daily routine, where human life has no value and where political killings are rampant, the APC/PDP billionaires are helping Boko Haram militants to be smart and to exchange strategies over time. So, recently they concealed explosives in containers transporting fruits. Our men and women in uniform are gradually adapting to the constantly changing tactics of the members of the Boko Haram but for how long?
On January 26, 2016, our Special Forces captured nine Boko Haram terrorists in Achigachia and a Nigerian town of Gakara and killed a dozen others during an operation. They also succeeded in destroying three armored vehicles operated by Boko Haram. The Chadian soldiers have left amid speculation that their coffers are empty and that the French were planning to topple President Idris Deby via his son who is also a general in the army. There exist no proper collaboration with the Joint Multinational Force whose only small stock piles of ammunition have been destroyed by an imaginary fire at Mora. As we write today January 28, 2016, our military informant has announced a new attack in the city of Kerawa precisely in a camp hosting Nigerian refugees. There is talk of an act of terrorism involving suspected Boko Haram suicide bombers. As our intelligence unit prepares to provide you with the balance sheet of this new attack, we are saying that the time is ripe for a complete military action in Northern Nigeria.

President Paul Biya, some have claimed is a man of rigor and moralization. He is widely believed to have set the course for what is now the fight against corruption in Cameroon. He was heard saying recently that "During this hard times that we live, the large and long work of national construction involves the rigorous management and perseverance vis-à-vis the maneuvering force of demoralization, demobilization or destabilization". On the 31st of December, 2005, in his message to the nation, the Head of State, in a firm tone said, "the diversion of public funds to the detriment of the Cameroonian people. I would say today, very solemnly, has to stop."
In September 2007, in a press release made by the Cabinet, as in many other speeches, the Cameroonian Chief Executive reaffirmed his determination to fight every form of evil which prevents Cameroon from emerging as a great nation. He observed that "misappropriation of public funds, in whatever form, is a crime against the people deprived of the resources that belong to them. Such individuals must therefore be punished with the greatest severity." Correspondingly, Law No. 2001/028 of December 14th, 2011 created the Special Criminal Court. It was followed by Decree No. 2013/288 of September the 4th, 2013 that set the part for the return of stolen money from the state coffers.
However, on December the 23rd, 2015, in response to recent accusations of corruption made by Transparency International, Issa Bakary Tchiroma Cameroon's Communications Minister and Government Spokesman revealed that, "to date, there are at the Special Criminal Court, 129 files forwarded to the Specialized Corps of the judicial police; 115 cases entered, 123 indictments; 146 sentences of imprisonment with fines and court costs; 40 non-places visited; 78 acquittals; 41 decisions pending with over three billion CFA francs in refund as corpus delicti including almost 30 billion Swiss francs pronounced for damages suffered by the state. "
Interestingly, before the creation of the Special Criminal Court, the ruling CPDM regime had CONAC, (National Anti-Corruption Commission), whose president was reportedly involved in numerous financial scandals. The Biya regime also had ANIF (National Financial Investigation Agency), whose members lived a princely lifestyle at the expense of the Cameroonian taxpayer. All in all, the CPDM had CONSUPE (Higher State Control), and the Council of Budgetary and Financial Discipline (CDBF) both habouring fraudsters and looters.
Biya's 32 years in power have seen castles, spectacular scientific complexes, villas and many 5 star duplexes belonging to highly placed CPDM officials and members of government springing up in Cameroonian cities, without their owners being asked about the origin of their fortune. Who now is fooling who here? We of this publication believe and fervently too, that Minister Issa Tchiroma needs rest.
